Leather: Yes you can wear it. No you are not in a biker gang.

Personally, I feel as though leather has a bad rep. Seemingly reserved for biker gangs, taboo sexual practices, and Indiana Jones, it just is not the most popular. However, the new decade brought in a refreshing new look at leather and all the sexy, subtle ways it can add depth to a wardrobe. No more is leather associated with your grandfather's jacket, cowboy chaps, or the occasional newsboy cap that still makes an appearance (why). Still apprehensive? That's okay; there are endless ways, both bold and discreet, for everyone to find a little leather to love.

 1. The classic leather jacket
First on my list and in my opinion an absolute staple- a quality, classic jacket. With the re-emergence of leather a few years ago came a modern and figure flattering take on leather jackets. Often cropped, slightly fitted, and downright sexy, leather jackets today are surpassing the past by and far. As this will inevitably become a go-to piece in your closet, I suggest a color that compliments the majority of your wardrobe; for most people, this means black or a darker shade of brown. There are tons of styles to choose from, whether you are feeling "moto" or "pilot," but make sure that you LOVE the fit and the quality of the jacket as this is no small investment or passing fad. A jacket that is not skin tight but is somewhat contoured is the way to go- not only will you be able to wear a slinky backless top under it, but you will have room for a chunky sweater on a fall day. Against real leather for economic or ethical reasons? Try vegan leather. It sounds impossible...I know. My favorite black jacket is vegan leather & honestly you can not tell the difference. Free People offers tons of vegan leather options & not only are you helping an animal, but helping your wallet.

You would never guess that these are both vegan!

2. Leather pants / leggings / skirts
Top half not for you? No worries. Leather bottoms are a great way to break out of your jeans / leggings slump. The key with leather bottoms is to make sure that it doesn't look like they were painted on. Frankly, that is not attractive on anyone. That being said, leather pants or leggings should be mostly fitted, but you should still have some room to breathe and actually move around. I would highly suggest faux or vegan leather, which gives you a blend of fabrics so there is a little stretch. Feeling a skirt? A fitted or flared mini skirt is the way to go. Black or dark metallic and same fitting rules apply. The catch with leather bottoms is to make the rest of your look simple so that the whole thing looks effortless...not like you are dressed in a rock n roll costume. Simple pumps or flats, a flattering neckline, tucked in waist, and minimalist jewelry will do the trick.

 3. Just a Hint
If you find that these options are a tad too bold for you, there are plenty of other low key and subtle options. A great pair of ankle leather booties work effortlessly with mini dresses and tights or dark skinnys. A leather clutch will never cease to be timeless AND useful. If you consider your style to be classic and elegant, a wrist watch with a black leather band is for you. A small dose of leather is a great way to modernize an old school piece as well. Try a clean tuxedo pant with a leather pinstripe or a v-neck sweater with leather cuffs and collar.
